Field Day 2013

Today is Field Day at Natalie and Eric's school. I signed up to help set-up from 7:15-8:15, so after breakfast at home (Cinnabons from Schlotzky's), I took them to school. I loved watching Natalie help Eric out of my car. Eric has been sitting in the third row seat and rather than have him stepping all over the second row seats and middle divider, I have him exit the car through the back. Natalie helped him get down then she held his hand as we walked to the school and inside. I told her that I wouldn't get to see her holding Eric by the hand to walk him into school much anymore since they'll be in different schools after this year. At first she wouldn't let me take a picture, but then I told her that I had already taken some pictures from behind. She grudgingly agreed.

We had been running late as usual because Eric was finishing up an application for the Lighthouse team that Natalie was on this past year. The Lighthouse team is supposed to be made up out of student leaders. I'm actually not sure exactly what that job entails, but Natalie gets to make the overhead announcements every morning. One of the ladies in the office told me when I was checking out of the school after my volunteer shift that she was so happy to have been able to work with Natalie this year doing the announcements. She said (about Natalie), "You have a good one there." Yes, I have to agree.

The application consisted of a question, "Who is a leader?" and a picture of what a leader looks like. Eric's answer to the question was, "Teachers, principals, and parents." He had to be prompted a little bit, but that was all his idea. Patrick did have to put a "translation" down because those words are a bit hard for him to spell at this point in time. His picture was of him as a line leader with his friend Christopher right behind him and his teacher in the front.

After the set-up, Patrick and I volunteered for the Sno-cone table from 8:15-9:15. We volunteered for this station last year also. It's great because you can be in the shade and you have plenty of ice to cool you down if you need it. Field Day consists of a bunch of these stations. This year it's 12 different stations, from playing in the playscape to various games (obstacle course, water slide, etc.) usually involving water. It's usually very hot outside at this time of year. Every eight minutes, the kids switch stations, so that's when we get a big mass of kids all wanting Sno-Cones at the same time. Last year we only had two flavors, one red and one purple, I think. This year they have three, one cherry, one grape, and one strawberry. The first class we served all wanted cherry. The other classes were more mixed. It's interesting that they have the big jugs right in front of them with the already made Sno-Cones in front of each jug and they still ask what flavor it is.

Patrick has all the tips down from last year. We can't make the Sno-Cones too early or they will melt. We also can't put the flavors in too early or the ice will melt from the syrups that are warmer than the ice. After our shift was over, we left. I went to get my hair cut then we had lunch at La Madeleine. We return for another shift this afternoon at 1:15-2:15.

I thought I would go ahead and write this blog post now while I have time. I'll probably take more pictures this afternoon.

Getting Ready

As an update to my last post about Natalie shopping, we went out again on the following day, Sunday, this time with Margot's mom with us. I bought Natalie another shirt, a skirt, another denim vest, and a pair of summer boots. She actually wore a dress paired with the boots when she and my family (minus Anthony) came to bring me lunch and visit me while I was on call on Memorial Day. I love her new look. :) Maybe this is her way of getting ready for middle school next year.

This is a picture of Eric at his swim practice today. Like Natalie, he doesn't want to miss any swim practices. It rained yesterday and he actually didn't want to go to swim practice, even though the rain had stopped. He didn't hesitate to get in the pool today, even though the water has been cold lately because of the recent rains.

Today they practiced how to do relay starts and the practiced what the start of each race was going to sound like. They used the same starting horn that they will use this coming Saturday. Eric is very excited about his first swim meet. He is adorable when he swims--he pulls his entire head out of the water to breath, unless it's the backstroke, in which case he seems to go faster because he doesn't have to worry about when to breathe. He can breathe all the time--like his sister.

Natalie had planned on going to the neighborhood swim practice tomorrow instead of her club swim practice so she can get to know those coaches a little better, in anticipation of the first neighborhood swim meet. Also, she can go to bed earlier when she swims in the neighborhood since her practice there is right after Eric's at 6:30-7:30 (instead of 6-8 for club swim). She didn't go swimming at all today, however, because of her period starting. She says she wants to swim tomorrow.

The kids are all getting ready for school to be over for the summer. Anthony has one more project due tomorrow and then he has one English final exam next week and that's it for his high school career. The rest of his classes either had projects as their final exams or he is exempt from their final exams. (He can be exempt from three final exams each semester but he was only able to be exempt from two.) His last day of school is Tuesday, June 4th.

Alex has finals this week and then supposedly he doesn't have anything next week. Natalie and Eric don't really have anything left, except fun stuff.  They have their Field Day tomorrow. Tuesday will be Mindfest (I'll blog about that next week), and Natalie has a Talent Show next Wednesday. Thursday, June 6th is the last day of school for all of them. Patrick had I will have at least two awards ceremonies on that day (for Alex and Natalie).

Then of course we're getting ready for Anthony's graduation next Thursday, June 6th. My friend Alicia told me today that I was right when I told her even though we think that we are busy now, we always get busier later. Both of her daughters had graduations the past two days. Yes, we will get even busier.

Natalie Goes Shopping

Natalie suddenly loves shopping. We went to Kohl's two weeks ago to get her a dress for a Bat Mitzvah that she was invited to. On that trip she also wanted to "look around" and found a sparkly, frilly shirt. I thought it was over when I offered to go shopping with her this past week again and she refused. Fast forward to today.

We went to swim practice this morning, but when we got there, her coach told her that he was told to cancel practice because of the thunderstorms rolling through our area. Instead of going home, she wanted to shop at Kohl's. That was just the beginning. The total haul today for Natalie was as follows:

Kohl's--three tops and two jean shorts
JcPenney--two tops
Love Culture--Denim vest
Forever 21--two dresses and one romper

Notice the photo above. Not everything listed above is in the photo, but you can see lace and flowers. There is still the obligatory red clothing (her favorite color), but there are other colors. To be fair, she still wanted me to buy a boys' shark shirt like the one I bought for Eric at Gymboree.

What is the difference? We went shopping with her friend Margot, and Margot encouraged her to try some things on--like dresses and clothes with flowers on it. Natalie still has her limit. One thing Margot suggested apparently had flowers that were too big and bold on it, and Natalie nixed it. She's not completely girly and not completely a tomboy. She's rather like me, actually. She even said she was going to wear one of her new dresses to church tomorrow.

I took this second photo at North Star Mall this afternoon. We picked up Margot at about 1pm and headed to the mall. The new Lego Store opened yesterday. We got to build big bricks that the Master Builders were going to use to make an eight-foot R2D2 to decorate the front of the store. They had people dressed as Star Wars characters roaming around posing for photos.

We ate lunch at the Food Court and then Margot and Natalie were off shopping. Margot had a phone, so I stayed in touch with them that way. I stayed with Eric. They had a line to go into the Lego Store, so we went to the Disney Store instead. Eric bought two Cars cars (Fabrizio and Rip Clutchgoneski) with his allowance money). We then pretty much followed the girls all around the mall, not necessarily shopping with them, but near where they were so I could swoop in and buy things for my dear daughter. Eric held up fairly well, but at 4pm, he was asking to go home. Natalie had shopped for three hours and they were talking about going back tomorrow. I should have counted my blessings when it was only Alex that was the super shopper!

DATA Awards Night 2013

Anthony's last awards ceremony for the year was last night, for his magnet school Design and Technology Academy (DATA). Patrick said he thought this night was even more important to these kids than the whole school graduation in two weeks. We've been to this ceremony before, because they also hand out awards for the other grades on this night, not just the seniors. This time was more special, of course. Anthony finally got one of those cool wooden statues that they hand out to every DATA senior!

Anthony received a DATA Award of Excellence, which means that at least one DATA teacher nominated him for his/her class. He has only one DATA teacher this year, Mrs. Vines, who already nominated him for the Core Value award for Perseverance (see last blog post) at the awards ceremony on Tuesday morning, so we figured that she had nominated him for this award as well. She was still out of town and couldn't be at this ceremony either. Apparently her daughter is competing at the NCAA Golf Tournament in Georgia this week and is up for the Woman Golfer of the Year.

Rackspace is one of the big companies in town and probably partly because of their proximity to Anthony's high school, they are big supporters. All the students at DATA have to give a Senior Design Project Presentation. This year, Rackspace asked the DATA faculty to choose ten student presentations to present at Rackspace with various employees from different levels of the company in attendance. The lady in this picture said that when the students were finished, she said they all looked each other and said, "Wow, these kids are all smarter than us." That was nice to hear since they chose Anthony as the first place winner! He received a $500 scholarship from Rackspace as his prize. Not to take anything away from Anthony, who did a lot of work and did a fabulous job on the presentation, but I told Patrick that prize partially belonged to him. Patrick guided Anthony through some of the technical aspects of building his model that I would never have thought of. Anthony's friend good friend Jake received third place. That was really awesome too!

Jake is the valedictorian of the class, and Anthony is the salutatorian. Amazingly, neither of them will be speaking at the whole school graduation. This concept seems so bizarre to Patrick and me, that #1 and #2 don't automatically get to speak at the graduation. At least Jake got to speak at the DATA graduation. He gave a very good speech that was a good mix of serious and fun.

Anthony also received a DATA Alliance scholarship for $1000. DATA Alliance is the PTA for DATA. They were able to raise enough money this year for eight such scholarships. Besides Anthony, four of his friends also received DATA Alliance scholarships, Maddy, Matt, Izzy, and Jake. They looked cool up there with their big checks.

The last award was for students that had received all four Core Value Awards. This was special because each student can only be nominated once per year. There were only sixteen seniors out of 88 that got all four Core Value Awards, and Anthony was one of them. We are SO proud of him!

This is a picture of the awards that he received all stacked up on the floor after the ceremony. He was socializing and didn't want to risk dropping any of them. I have to say that I got a kick out of seeing him and his friends carry around their big checks like the big lottery winners do. There were snacks afterwards as well, and Anthony typically wanted to have some treats, especially the traditional chocolate fountain. Anthony tweeted after the ceremony, "Plus that chocolate fountain. Highlight of my night. The awards were cool too. But they weren't smothered in chocolate." He totally puts things in perspective, and I love him for his humor. So proud of you, sweetie!

Senior Awards Night

This was the stage set up before Anthony's Senior Awards Night last Thursday, May 16th. This was the first of three awards ceremonies for him, and the only one that included students from all of his high school, not just the students from his particular magnet school. The ceremony was held at the Littleton Gym of the big Blossom Athletic Center complex, and started at 7pm. We were there at 6pm, however, because Anthony was told to be there early. We were there a total of three hours! Thank goodness we didn't bring the other kids!

I love how when Anthony sees me with a camera, he knows that I want to take a picture and he doesn't hide from me--unlike two of his siblings. Anthony was recognized with the following awards: National Merit Semi-Finalist (although he is actually a finalist), Summa Cum Laude, Distinguished Achievement Scholar, All-Districk Athletic Achievement Scholar for Soccer, and the Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Departmental Awards. He was the only one to get recognized with three departmental awards. The others only got one or two. They announced them all at once, with each person standing as their name was called. Since his name was called three times, he bent his legs a little and then stood up straight again after his name was called the second and third time. He can be such a goofball.

The Distinguished Achievement Scholar award was for the curriculum that he had in high school, which included four years each of Math, Science, English, and Social Studies, as well as a Foreign Language. He actually exceeded even those requirements. The All-Districk Athletic Achievement Scholar award was for getting all A's while participating in a sport for four years. While he participated in Cross Country and Track, he did not participate in those sports for four years. He was picked for the Departmental Awards by his teachers.

The reason why the ceremony lasted so long was that everyone who received an award had to walk across the stage, receive a medal from the principal and shake his hand, pose for a picture, then walk off stage to get their packet of certificates. The gold cord designating Anthony as Summa Cum Laude that he will wear at graduation was also there. For his school, "Summa Cum Laude" means he has above a 100 average.

Anthony's second awards ceremony was yesterday morning (Tuesday, May 21). Anthony's school promotes four "core values", which are Perseverence, Integrity, Commitment, and Kindness. He received the award for "Perseverance" from his Senior Project teacher, Mrs. Vines. He can only get one award per year and he received the other three awards in his first three years of high school. He also got to stand up and be recognized at the end with a handful of other kids who had also received all four awards. We have one more awards ceremony tomorrow. I'm working late, so hope I can make it.

Elementary School Track Meet

Natalie missed swim practice one day last week, and that was for a track meet. Interestingly enough, they didn't tell the kids what events they were going to be in until the day before. They didn't seem to assign events based on talent. Natalie said she signed up for "anything", meaning they could put her in whatever event they wanted, which meant a field event since everyone else wanted to run. She just wanted to participate and be with her friends. I think they just wanted to spread around the assignments so that as many kids as possible could participate. Both the fourth and fifth grades at the various schools participated.

She was picked for the "Softball Throw" event. Maybe it's just me, but I've never heard of "Softball Throw" being a field event in Track and Field. Still, I came from work and met Patrick and Eric at the stadium. Patrick had to pick both kids up early because Natalie had to be there by 3:45 and their bus doesn't drop them off near our house until after 3:15 sometimes.

There were a lot of elementary schools there, I heard someone mention 15 schools. The kids participating in the field events were grouped together on the football field, while they ran the track events simultaneously. When it was Natalie's turn she just stood up there and threw five softballs. I don't know if she was even aiming. Five times all in quick succession--she threw the ball. All five times she hit the target. She got a blue ribbon for hitting the target five out of five times. Her friends that play softball want her to try out for the team.

It was really hot that day, so pretty much after her event, I took Eric home with me. I had to shower off and change clothes. We had to go to another event, Anthony's Senior Awards Night. I'll blog about that tomorrow.

Do Over Get Better

We had a busy week last week, so I'm going to try to play catchup on the blog this coming week. Of course, this week has its share of activities as well. First I'm going to go over Natalie's swim meet this weekend. I was on call for 24 hours on Saturday, so this is the first swim meet I've missed, and unfortunately, I'm sure this won't be the last meet I miss. I was able to go on Sunday, though, and that made me feel a little better.

This is a picture of Natalie with her friend Ally. You can't tell very well in this photo, but Ally is about a head taller than Natalie. I think she's actually even taller than me, but I never did stand right next to her. Ally is younger than Natalie, about three months younger. Ally used to swim for a different branch of AAAA, the swim club that Natalie swims for. She transferred in a month or two ago and the two of them were on the same team (that works out together and has the same coach) until Natalie just moved up on Friday. Ally's mom was talking about how much better Ally is doing on this team and how they like this team so much better. Apparently, they didn't worry as much about technique on their old team and were pretty nasty when Ally left. She's had to really work at changing her technique for the better. Patrick and I have to agree that we love this Northside ISD AAAA. We have to pay an out of district fee to be on this team (since we're in the Northeast ISD), but it's been worth it. Our own home district team seems disorganized and the practice times are different each day. Natalie is in no hurry to switch over, although she will have to switch when she gets into high school so she'll be able to work out with her high school team.

Along the lines of doing things over, we had an unusual event occur yesterday. Natalie swam in the 50 meter Freestyle. There was a problem during the start of the race, where they didn't give the kids much time between when they got into position to start and when the starting horn sounded. Natalie's time during that race was 40.16 sec. Her seed time was 40.38 sec, so she wasn't that happy that she had knocked off so little time. The meet officials decided to run that heat again, after all the girls had gone and after all the boys had gone--to give them time to rest and recover. I don't know that much about swimming technique, but it seemed to me that she wasn't moving her arms fast enough. Apparently Natalie's coach agreed and told her that she was moving her arms one at a time when she was supposed to be moving them continuously. When we found out she had to swim again, she was still in a funk from not being happy with her time, but I told her that she had a second chance.

When they ran the heat again, they had a delay this time between when they told the girls to get into their starting position and when the horn blew for them to actually start. Natalie got first place in her heat this time, with a time of 39.32 sec. Her arms were noticeably moving faster. Wow, imagine that--moving your arms and legs faster leads to a faster time! She had to grin at that, and so did one of the head coaches. Well, there was yet one more glitch. Apparently, the reason why there seemed to be a delay in the start was that they pushed the button once and no sound came out (that the girls could hear), but the timer started. They blew the horn again and then the girls started swimming, about a second and a half after the timer started. All the girls' times were actually about 1.5 seconds faster. Because they didn't know exactly how much time had elapsed, they couldn't adjust the times. Natalie's coach said that he wanted the second faster time to be recorded. Swimming the heat a third time was not going to be good for the swimmers. Now at least we know that she can swim a faster time than 39.32 sec.

By the way, these last two photos were not from Sunday. Patrick took them on Saturday. Didn't he do a great job? I confess that I've stopped taking photos of Natalie swimming. Maybe once every few months I'll take photos. After all, how many swimming photos do I need? Besides, she looks the same in all of them, just different strokes.

I'm going to do the usual list below (for my own records). The first time will be the time she achieved during this swim meet. The second time (in parentheses) is her seed time or her best time. The last number will be her placement amongst how many total girls under the age of 10 that swam that same race. She did not swim in all the races she could have been in. Her previous coach must have wanted her to focus just on these seven events. The problem with Natalie is that she gets anxious to race and waiting does not do great things for her times. Her new coach says that he'll have her swimming five events a day in the next meet.

50m free-- 39.32 (40.38) 15 out of 51
100m free-- 1:25.66 (1:25.36) 15/51
50m back-- 40.34 (40.61) 1/49
100m back-- 1:26.51 (1:27.64) 1/45
50m breast-- 66.01 (54.33) 21/50
50m butterfly-- 39.09 (41.24) 3/38
200m IM-- 3:27.57 (3:28.36) 11/27

Natalie's friend Maddie swam in this swim meet too. Maddie hasn't been in a swim meet since probably January. In the meantime she had pneumonia and wasn't able to swim for a few weeks. This was her first long course meet and she knocked off as much as 20 seconds off her seed times. Yay, Maddie!

Natalie is also doing better in coping with her expectations. She still gets disappointed and pouts, but she doesn't cry anymore and her sullen time has decreased. She's still a work in progress. She'll have six meets (five neighborhood swim meets and one AAAA swim meet) to deal with in June to continue working on that.

Party Party

Natalie was invited to her friend's Bat Mitzvah. I confess that I'm pretty ignorant about other religions, so it's great that Natalie gets exposed to traditions from other religions. Since Patrick and I had tickets to see a show at the Majestic Theatre and Anthony had his prom, there were no drivers in our house that could take her. On top of that, the ceremony didn't even start until 8:45pm. Luckily, her best friend Margot was invited and also going, and her Mom offered to take Natalie and even let her sleep over there, so that became the plan.

I was pleasantly surprised at how Natalie herself mentioned to me a week and a half ago about how she needed a dressier dress than what she currently owns. I'm not such a great mom when it comes to thinking of such things. The challenge was finding the time to go shopping. This past week, I came home from work briefly, then we went out again to shop before her swim practice. We were on a tight schedule because we like for her to eat by about 5pm so she can digest her food a bit before her 6pm swim practice. Thankfully, we were easily able to find something she liked and that fit. We even had time to sit down at Fuddrucker's (her choice) for dinner. On Friday, we went out to get her a little sweater to wear over her dressy dress. She tends to wear the same casual hoodies all the time, whether she is dressed up or not, so it was nice to get her something dressier.

On Saturday, Margot invited her over early so they could get their nails done. I quickly put her hair into a French braid and dropped her off, but this meant that I couldn't get a picture of her all dressed and ready to go. The second picture is of her other Mother's Day gift that I mentioned yesterday. I wanted her to hold up the present so she could show off her nails. She got them done in turquoise and black to match her outfit. Margot's mom thought she needed a little extra something to go with her dress, so she loaned Natalie a necklace. Again, I'm not such a great mom when it comes to thinking of such things. I have trouble accessorizing my own outfits. Margot's mom took the first picture above of (left to right) Margot, another friend named Ava, and Natalie. They all look beautiful (and so grown up), don't they?

We didn't see Natalie until just before church yesterday morning. She talked about how they had gotten home at 12:30am and been in bed by 1am. They danced a lot and had a lot of fun. Several of people from the fifth grade at her school were there, including some from her class. She said that she got uncomfortable wearing flats (she borrowed my black patent flats) and took them off to dance. I told her that she shouldn't be so uncomfortable in flats. I think she just wanted to go barefoot like everyone else.

Here is one picture from before the prom that Anthony forwarded to me. One of his friends house-sits at this house where the five couples (Anthony and his friends) got their pictures taken. They aren't professional photos, but I'll take what I can get. I told the boys that they were responsible for paying for all of their formal dance attire if they don't get me photos from their respective nights. Alex still owes me some pictures. Anthony threw down the gauntlet in front of him and basically said, "I gave Mama pictures, now it's your turn."

Natalie and Anthony were pretty tired yesterday from all of their partying on Saturday night. It was nice to let them have fun, but it was also nice to have them home again for Mother's Day. I keep thinking about how we won't all be together next year because Anthony will be in college. I've got to enjoy this while it lasts.

Happy Mother's Day 2013

This will be a picture-heavy post for any of you with dial-up or slow internet. I couldn't leave anything out. My dear husband indulged me with a photo of me with my beautiful children. He took something like 30 photos, but I ended up liking the first one the best. Most of it was beyond his control since Eric was making different faces and then he pointed that out then the rest of us started looking at Eric's faces, etc. One thing to note--I was wearing high heels but I'm standing on a step lower than the kids.

We started out with only three children in the house. Natalie had spent the night over at her friend Margot's house--more on that tomorrow. I was still in bed when Eric presented me with his presents. I took a picture of the front of his Mother's Day card and the inside sentiment (below). He also made a bookmark. He took the bookmark out of his backpack on Friday when I was standing next to him. Patrick asked him what it was and he replied, "It's for Mother's Day." Patrick told him that maybe he wasn't supposed to tell me about that already. Eric told me later that he had other "gifts" that he had put on the formal dining room table. I avoided going in the formal dining room so I would have some sort of surprise this morning.

His writing is getting better and better. This is also one of the very few non-dinosaur drawings I've seen him do. He gave me a hug and told me "Happy Mother's Day, Mama." He greeted me with "Happy Mother's Day, Mama" several times today. What a sweetie.

This is the inside of the card he made me. He said that he drew himself about to give me a hug. It was only then that I noticed his outstretched stick arms pointed in my direction. It's so cute that he felt the need to identify "You" and "Eric" along with the "Mama" label. Hilarious!

We got dressed for church (9am mass) and picked up Natalie on the way there. We should have picked her up earlier, because she was still asleep when we got there. It took her about 15-20 minutes or so to get ready. Meanwhile the rest of us waited in the car. She wore the dress that she wore last night to the Bat Mitzvah of a classmate that she went to last night. I'll describe a few more details in a post tomorrow. When we got home, we took the picture of me with the kids above.

This is Eric's other present to me. His teacher obviously wrote out his answers. It would have been nicer to have his own handwriting on it, but maybe they didn't want to deal with all the questions about spelling and such. You can click on the picture and get a bigger version if you want to read all of it. Patrick found it interesting that they had a question about how old their mom is. I'm sure that can provide hilarious results when the child doesn't know how old their mom really is. He must have known my age. I found it interesting that Eric thinks that my favorite food is "Wendy's". I guess he's never noticed that when I bring him Wendy's at school, I never have any Wendy's food with me to eat. Generally I'll eat elsewhere first or I'll eat at home afterwards.

This is a picture from the Quarry Golf Club where we had brunch. I wanted a buffet style meal so the kids could pick and choose and overeat if they wanted to. We sat inside but enjoyed the outside after we ate. Eric ate almost an entire Belgian waffle all by himself, along with some fruit, a blueberry muffin, a biscuit, and a small piece of sausage. Natalie ate mostly "desserts" including a large slice of chocolate cake. She ate a minimal amount of a chicken tender. The rest of us ate a more varied selection. I ate a spinach, mushroom, tomato, and cheese omelet and I sampled their pasta bar as well. I actually didn't have any sweets, except for some pineapple and strawberries.

This is one of Natalie's presents. She seemed especially embarrassed about the "poem". I'm not sure why they told the kids to include the "poem" about being a leader on a present for Mother's Day, but I like the picture of her and I like the color of the picture frame. I already know she's a leader. I love that she has a few leadership roles at school. That will only make her better as she gets older. I'll post a photo of her other present tomorrow.

After brunch, we came home and I took the kids to Target. They love going to Target. The rest of the afternoon was pretty relaxed and then Patrick made salmon for dinner. He is getting so good at cooking. He doesn't love to cook, but I love that he loves to cook for me. :) This is a silly picture of the kids I took after dinner when we were about to go out to Brindles for ice cream. Yes, I'm taking my kids out for a treat on Mother's Day. The big boys decided to make me a tunnel for going out to the garage. The smaller kids decided to join in. They were trying to make me feel special. :) Of course, this came after some jokes about how Anthony could pay for the ice cream--with the credit card we gave him using our account. Jokes aside, though, I think they would totally buy me ice cream later when they have their own money.

So, this is the end of our last "free weekend" until about the July time frame. The next few weekends will be even busier.

Prom and Fashion

Anthony's senior prom is tonight. He had planned to go as a group, I think, but then he heard that a girl he knew had turned down a couple of offers because she wanted to go with him. Apparently, he couldn't just ask her, he had to come up with a more elaborate plan. I don't know all the details, so I hope I don't get this wrong. He went to her house with some friends and spelled out something like "prom?" with glow sticks. He originally thought about using candles, but it was windy that night and he wisely came up with a different plan. His friends took pictures and video, which I have yet to see. She was happy with his "promposal" and apparently, her mom liked it too. They are still going with a group of friends, but now he has a "date". I hope he has a lot of fun AND he takes pictures that he can show me later.

Anthony seems to like this look with the dark shirt and lighter colored tie. Alex likes this look too. Patrick went with him to rent this tux a couple of weeks ago, the same day they bought a suit for Alex for his formal last week. Alex didn't think to buy the $5 photo that they offered at his dance, so I don't have any good photos of him in his suit. I'll have to make him put it on again another time so I can get a good photo. I may be just a little biased, but I think my boys are pretty cute, especially when they dress up. Notice the white watch. That is Alex's watch. Alex has three watches like that, and probably more shoes than his siblings put together.

Speaking of Alex, this is a picture of his feet on Friday. He had asked two of his friends to sleep over last night, so after I got off work, I picked him up after school so I could also pick up his friends. I noticed that he was wearing this on his feet and he actually let me take a picture. This is the first time in a very long time that he willingly let me take a picture of him. I'll take what I can get.

Eric's First Swim Practice

We recently had our neighborhood pool re-plastered and the deck replaced as part of a maintenance and improvement project. Neighborhood swim team practices were originally scheduled to start on Monday, May 6th, but the pool had just been refilled with water. They still had to add chemicals and make sure they were just right. Finally today, practice was a "go".

Theoretically, the delay at least let the pool warm up a tiny bit, but the temperatures have barely been in the low 80s plus it rained, so the pool really wasn't warm at all. Still, Eric was super excited to swim! Eric will practice with the smaller kids (8 and under), so his practice time will be 5:45-6:30pm Monday through Friday until school ends in a few weeks. Tonight they started out with all the kids who didn't swim last year. Coach Jesse wanted to test them to make sure they could swim across the pool (25 meters) without stopping.

When we first got to the pool, Eric took a while to get in the water, but then his friend (our across the street neighbor) John Daniel got in, and John Daniel encouraged Eric to get in. Then it was time for the testing, so Eric got in line with the rest of them. Eric was wrapped in a towel while he waited for his turn, and then when he had to get in the water, he was a little hesitant. Once it was his turn, however, he became very energetic.

Coach Jesse and his assistant coach were in the water making sure the kids stayed safe as they swam across the pool. Most of them were clearly new swimmers, but all of them made it across with just a little help. Eric was able to swim 25 meters last year, but he has not tried to do that since probably last summer. He did what he did last summer, every so often he got on his back so he could rest before continuing on across the pool. At this rate, he should be even better at backstroke than he is at freestyle.

After the testing, the practice time was almost over. The kids that were ages 6 and under swam a little and then Eric said he wanted to get out, probably because he was cold. We went ahead and started leaving a few minutes before the end of practice. It rained earlier today and it looked like it was going to rain again. When we got to our car, the lightning started, so everyone got out of the pool anyway. Practice was over. Despite being cold, Eric was still asking about when the next swim practice was going to be. He is ready to swim!

Everyone was asking if Natalie was going to be on the swim team since she wasn't there tonight. She has had practice or a swim meet every day for the last eleven days. Even though they were going to be going over the IM tonight, she decided that she needed a break. Patrick and I have been telling her how grouchy she has been, so she finally admitted that maybe she needed more sleep.

I want to do a quick recap of her events from last weekend's swim meet. This picture shows her two ribbons (one for fifth place in the 50m Fly and one for fourth place in the 100m Fly) and two medals (third places for the 50m and 100m Back). The following are her seeded times in parentheses, actual times, and her placement amongst the other 10-year-olds:

50 Free (37.45) 40.38-- 21st out of 25
100 Free (1:26.49) 1:27.77-- 18th out of 35
50 Back (39.93) 40.61-- 3rd out of 28
100 Back (1:29.63) 1:28.49-- 3rd out of 32
50 Breast (53.32) 54.33-- 17th out of 27
100 Breast (1:59.79) 2:00.81-- 19th out of 25
50 Fly (40.48) 41.24-- 5th out of 30
100 Fly (1:35.99) 1:39.19--4th out of 9
200 IM (3:36.09) 3:29.34-- 11th out of 21

Note that the seeded times are short course times that were converted to long course times, which Patrick says aren't really accurate anyway. Natalie is of course expecting to improve on the converted times, and she did at the last meet. She wasn't herself during this meet, so hopefully she'll get her wish next week when she has another meet. She has really been driven lately, even more than usual, because she has this goal. I'm glad that at least she felt like she could take a break this weekend.

Jungle Party

Eric and the other kindergarteners and first graders got to perform a series of songs with a jungle theme yesterday evening, at his elementary school. The performance was after the last scheduled PTA meeting of the year. They often tack these performances after a PTA meeting to increase attendance. There were a lot of people there, most of them with cameras. Almost all of the kids wore costumes, although it wasn't required. Eric wore an old tiger costume that I originally made many years ago when I used to make the kids' Halloween costumes. I still remember little Anthony wearing this same costume. I'm so happy that Eric can wear it now.

Patrick couldn't come because Natalie had swim practice and we've been trying to take her as much as possible so she can keep improving her times. Anthony went to a friend's house to study for the AP Calculus exam that was scheduled for this morning. Alex didn't want to go to the PTA meeting and wanted to wait to watch the video. Of course that meant that I had to video the performance so the rest of my family that couldn't attend could watch it. It was a tough show to videotape, but I did the best I could. I had no idea where Eric was going to be standing so I didn't know where to sit/stand. There were SO many people trying to get pictures and video and I'm not very tall. The music teacher, Mrs. Rogers, did a great job of rotating the kids onstage to spread around the photo opportunities for each child.

Eric wasn't singing along as much as he was dancing and doing all of the hand motions, but I'm sure the video will be a precious keepsake of this very cute age. I took a separate video for each song, so hopefully Patrick will put them together in one video one of these days to share with the family.

Cinco de Mayo Swim Meet

Because of all the people of Mexican heritage who live here in San Antonio, Cinco de Mayo is a big annual celebration. My brother-in-law even comes to town for a soccer tournament every year. Now that Natalie is swimming competitively, she will probably participate in this meet every year also. I'm sure that there are a few things that make this year unique, however.

First of all, I have only photos of Eric because I've pretty much stopped taking pictures of Natalie swimming. After all, how many photos of Natalie swimming do I need? Second, we had to take Eric with us on Friday because he would spend less time in the car this way. Patrick had to go across town to pick up Alex from school and then he had to take Alex to his friend's house. Ten friends total were splitting the cost of a limousine to go to the Eighth Grade Formal Dance, and they were meeting at this friend's house. I was not there so I couldn't take pictures. Of course they had a photographer at the dance, but Alex didn't spend the $5 to get a copy for me. After the dance (he brought a change of clothes to his friend's house), they went to see the new Iron Man 3 movie. Patrick picked him up after the 10 pm movie, so they didn't get home until after 1 am.

I brought a few extra things for Eric to do to keep him busy. I brought a new coloring book that came with four small plastic dinosaurs and a sheet of stickers. Eric decided to stick them on himself. I discouraged him from putting the stickers on his face, especially his nose, but I let him remove the sticker after I got this picture. Instead, he put the stickers on my shirt and his shirt. In the photo below, I guess he decided to roar like a dinosaur or something or other. I don't like to discourage his making faces if he wants to, because I can still record this stage in his life when he makes these faces. As long as he lets me take a picture, I don't really care what face he's making.

I also brought snacks. When I got the kids home from school (I had to pick them up early so we could go to this meet), they shared three mangos that my Mom and brought last weekend. I cut the other two (the last ones) and packed them. Eric ate a pack of fruit chews, shared the mangos with Natalie, a Special K bar, cheese nachos and a bag of Lay's potato chips, and he was still crying that he was hungry. At least by that time Patrick had joined us and they had started selling hotdogs at the concession stand. After that he seemed satisfied and played quietly on the iPad.

Now this last part might not be interesting to anyone but family, so feel free to stop reading. Even for family this might be TMI (too much information). Okay, this is the last warning to stop reading if you want to. ;)

Natalie got her period on Thursday. This is the fourth time she's gotten it since December. The last three times she has not tried to go swimming because of the issues involved with swimming while on your period, specifically using a tampon. She had a bad experience the first time and she didn't want to go there again, but the other times didn't involve a swim meet, only practices. On Thursday, she knew that she had a swim meet the next day. She was willing to try tampons again. We talked about this during lunch when I brought them lunch at school. After lunch I set out on a mission. I went to seven stores looking for a specific type of tampon. I found something that might work, based on the advice of some friends, but I wanted to have an alternative in case that one didn't work. No luck finding the alternative, but then luckily, I didn't need one. No tears this time. No complaints of pain and being uncomfortable. She went swimming Thursday night and she was laughing and socializing normally plus the important part--she seemed to be swimming normally.

I was so happy that she was happy. Patrick and I have said it many times, but Natalie is much harder on herself than we are on her. She WANTED to swim. She did not want this period thing to slow her down. Her various coaches have said that a lot of girls don't even try to swim when they are on their periods. Still, she was a bit more stressed than in the usual swim meet because of this extra thing to worry about. So far she hasn't had any personal bests, but she seems okay with it. No tears like in previous meets. She hasn't been happy with adding time, but at least she is not inconsolable. She knows that she will be in another meet in two weeks.

I'll give a full report of her numbers tomorrow.
