I can't post pictures from this computer, but I'm writing this post from the hospital right now. How cool is it that they have wireless internet here? The big news, of course, is that DS#3 was born yesterday, April 9, 2007, at 6:04PM. He weighed in at 7 lbs. 14 oz. and was measured out at 20 1/4 inches long. I was actually surprised at how "small" he was. He and I are both doing great, except that he's having a little trouble learning how to nurse. All of my children have had "issues" with that, except for DS#2. If he can learn some of that by this evening, we might actually get to go home today. Right now I'm not counting on it. I just think I'll be able to sleep better at home in my own bed with my mom's cooking instead of this awful hospital food. Now on to my birth story... WARNING--this is long, but I plan on printing this out later for my journaling on a future scrapbook page. :)
I'd been having contractions off and on for the last few months. I did notice a slight increase in frequency and strength lately. At around 6AM yesterday, when I was on my way to work, I noticed that I was having contractions that I felt in my back more than in my abdomen, and I was having them every 5 -10 minutes. I thought to myself, "Uh-oh! I hope I'm not in labor!" I went about my work and did notice that the contractions seemed to "stop". What probably happened was I got busy and didn't notice them so much, but when I did notice, they were as frequent as every 5-10 minutes.
Then around 11AM, I got a really strong one, painful enough that I had to sit down. Then I got another strong one five minutes later and then five minutes after that. I thought at this point that I should at least go home. I still wasn't sure if the contractions would continue (maybe I was in denial or maybe it was just being naive since the other deliveries were inductions). I called my DH to let him know that I was coming home and I made arrangements at work for someone to take over. I had also called my doctor's office, but I hadn't yet received a call back when I decided to go home.
On the way home, the contractions were definitely regular, and every 3-5 minutes. They were painful but nothing I couldn't handle. When I got home, I started packing my bag "just in case" I would have to go to the hospital as I awaited my doctor's call back. The contractions were getting stronger, though, to the point where I would have to stop what I was doing while I was having the contraction. I decided then that I should just go to the hospital, without my doctor calling back, but I did call her office to let them know.
It was 12:30 PM by the time we got to the hospital. We had the kids with us since they are on Easter Break this week. They were concerned but excited about the impending birth of their baby brother. We had called a friend who was out and about with his three kids (also on Easter Break this week) and he was going to pick up our kids at the hospital and take them overnight. I was already 5 cm at that time, and completely effaced. Luckily, they really jumped on getting my epidural started ASAP because I was really uncomfortable by then.
Most of the time was spent waiting for my doctor. She finally arrived some time after 3PM to break my bag of water. I was 8 cm by then. They didn't use any pitocin at all so this labor was my longest. I didn't feel much because of my epidural so my nurse went ahead and checked me at 5:30PM and I was completely dilated. Luckily, I didn't have the urge to push yet because my doctor was finishing up with another patient. It didn't take me long to push Eric out when she arrived. They had this mirror that allowed me to see him coming out. I'd never had that before, but it was actually helpful, because I was getting feedback when I pushed.
DH didn't stay the night with me last night like he has done with the previous deliveries. There wasn't an extra bed in my room, only an uncomfortable looking fold-out chair. He wanted to be able to do some laundry at home and also fetch some things that I would be needing (like this laptop). I also wanted him to be able to get some sleep, so I told him to go home. It was a long lonely night for me, but Eric did keep me company. We'll see what happens tonight. wish me luck!
